I have the chance to buy a
Sigma 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 d apo lens for my Nikon D5300. Would I get full auto ficus with this lens please?

I sure I state the obvious that you need to be sure that the example you are buying is the Nikon mount version??? Buy I surmise, bearing in mind what little I know of Nikon is that they have body varients that may not be 100% compatible with all Nikon mount lenses.......hopefully those in the know will chime in?

Looking for reviews I did find this page from when it was new 12 years ago.....

No autofocus on a D5300 as it lacks the in body autofocus motor needed for the older screw drive lenses. (far as I can tell it's a screw drive AF lens)

If you can get a picture of the lens mount, that'll confirm it. There would be what would look like a flat head screw in the lower right corner of the mount.

Looks like you are right

Used with a Nikon body it needs one with the AF motor in the body.

This situation reminds of back in 1989 why I went for Canon and their EOS mount system.....back then it struck me that putting the motor in the lens meant that it could be fine tuned per lens as opposed to having a one size fits all motor in the camera body!

Thank you for your replies, I had my suspicions, I will give it a swerve. Really wanted to use it for rugby photography to get a bit more focal length than my 55-300mm.

its a very old lens and your 55-300 will probably give better i.q anyway
