Hi there, I've just canon 17-55 and whilst looking for reviews on youtube I came across one that compares 4 standard zooms and this is one. I don't have the link as I'm on my phone but just stick 17-55 reviews into youtube and you'll find it.
Depends on your budget, Sigma have a tasty 18-35 1.8, might be a bit out of your budget? and a little wide? But it's what I'd be going for if I still shot DX [or whatever Canon call it ]
When I did, I used a tamron 17-50 2.8 and loved it. Can be got for very cheap, the older non VC version. And it's great quality.

I meant at the longer end 35mm might not be enough reach for OP, for a regular use lens Vs 50mm. Though I phrased it wrong, it should have been fairly obvious
I had one, it might not have been the current model, but it fringed badly, and the focus motor was far from the Canons I'm used to. So I sent it back and stumped up a lot of extra cash for the Canon 17-55. I'd do the same again tomorrow, but it depends on your priorities, for me the focussing on any 3rd party lens I've owned has been abysmally slow.
With my post I probably best add that it's my only lens (first dslr) so can't really compare against others. Surely it will never compare to the 17-55 though hence the price jump. But it works great for me.
