Yes
i have a sigma ef 500 dg super
i have had this for a while, and have to admit i have hardly used it.
one reason onboard flash as been ok for what i have used it for, and the other i dont understand how to use it . the manual might as well be in chinese
but iam now forced to using it if i need flash as i have got myself a 5d classic .
but i was wondering about using it off camera with a cord. can i use any that is for a canon or do i need a special one for sigma
also what about the wireless units i have seen in the mags for round about £30 - £50
would like it off camera for things like macro. but not for portraits or groups shots as i dont do this kind of stuff

That's a good flash. If it's set to defaults, just switch it on and it will work like the pop-up. But it does loads of other things, including, being a Super, acting as a master to control remote units wirelessly with full E-TTL control

There is so much you can do with that kind of versatility and power. You need to get over the learning hurdle and then you'll be away. Flash tends to be quite complicated and the auto flash operating controls are not very intuitive.

The easiest way to do off-camera flash is with a dedicated cord. Any Canon compatible cord will do, and will retain full E-TTL control. You can get very long ones for £30-50 (see the ad on here from FlashInThePan).

You can also do off-camera with a radio trigger but frankly I wouldn't bother for macro. Yongnuo RF-602 is very good and cheap (see FITP again). But all radio triggers except the very expensive ones like Pocket Wizard are strictly manual only - no E-TTL.
