I have just bought one of these for general use nothing fancy and the price was lower than the SB600, does anyone know if they can be used off camera using commander mode or do I have to buy a remote switch or cable also do they auto focus like the SB600, I doesnt really matter as its only for general use but the info would be nice to know.

Thanks

I would recommend you try reading the manual as it should all be explained in there but I tried reading the manual for my SB-800 last night and it may as well have been written in Chinese for all I understood of it. It was 163 pages of bullet points with no real plain English explaination as to how to use it.

My old SB600 manual was the same, lets hope sigma are clearer

Just downloaded the manual and according to the manual it does work in CLS mode

My first thought is.....

what are you going to trigger it with, if you use it off camera?

That won't work as a commander in CLS though, all you'd be able to do is use it to trigger the Sigma as a dumb slave and adjust the power output manually....

I thought the sb 400 would trigger the sigma but the sigma could be set up differently to the 400? I know nothing about flash photography as you can gather:thumbs:

Yes, it can be, but the 400 doesn't have the feature built in to allow it to act as a commander, just sending out the signal to trigger another flash.

Basically it will always contribute to the overall exposure, as you can't adjust it's output manually.

To put it basically I bought it because I need some fill light every now and then , but thought I can be creative too as I have a shot that I want to get that needs CLS.
Its a building where the flash is very close to the building and pointing up and the camera is at ground level and pointing in the same direction at 20m away (ish) and needed a way of triggering the flash about 20m away from the camera

by the way I havent bougt a 400 yet so what do you suggest

can I get anything else to triger the sigma or do I need to step in the office;)
