I was just testing a gel holder and getting the flash on the camera, going through the modes, kinda holding more than I should and suddenly my flash fires like a second of flash. Kinda like a moddeling light.

I have the canon 400D so I didnt think it had this option, if it does how do I use it?
Otherwise did I just have a crazy short as it might not have been on the hot shoe very tight?

my 450d and 430exII fire a modeling light if i press the DoF preview button, perhaps its this type of modelling light?

Stobe mode? You can get the 580 to fire at a repeated rate in a set amount of time...could be something similar!

sounds like the modelling light. It throws out a series of quick flashes that look to the human eye as a continuous light. It can't be done too many times in a row as it overheats the flash.

but how do you do it?

That I don't know. On my 430 EX II and 40D you press the depth of field preview button (bottom left of the lens mount) to trigger a one second burst of modelling light.

Check the Sigma's instruction manual to see if that helps.
