Damn.. Sorry, I cant work out how to make it public. I'll do it on a PC if I can, but basically hunting focus even if things are 7 or 8m away.. It doesn't do it all the time but I'm say 60 percent of the time. I take it this isn't normal??

Not with mine on my Nikon, what settings are you using?

i think ive managed to make the video public if you can try again? I'm shooting with aperture priority, AF switched on. A mode that works perfectly with every one of my other 20+ lenses...

Not familiar with Canon but that lens looks decidedly odd to me and I would suggest a repair is needed. :(

Definitely isn't normal. Is it a new lens? Send it back to where ever you purchased it.

it was purchased used on ebay but had no faults mentioned in the description. I'll be using it for 80% video so it's not an issue on manual focus, however I love the 85mm focal length for photography too and took it to a kids party today to practise and it was a joke.. even when people froze and smiled for a photo 3 or 4 meters away, the focus hunted for about 5 seconds before I smiled and said thankyou, actually knowing I hadn't been able to get a shot. Really disappointing as it's a lovely sharp lens on the photos I have managed to take with it.

E-bay "bargain" + repair costs = expensive "bargain"!

Yeah have contacted sigma and awaiting a reply. Not really true about Ebay, you can always return with faulty goods, it's just the hassle of it all..

sigma have said:

Dear David,

Sorry to hear you have an issue with your Sigma lens. From looking at the video it looks like a sensor may have failed causing the hunting.

Please send the lens to the address below with a covering letter and a copy of the purchase receipt if in warranty.

Turn around time is about 2-3 weeks.

Kind Regards

send that to the seller and ask for a refund then, theres no way theyd not know about the fault.

or get the seller to refund the cost of repair. service tarrif for an 85mm 1.4 is £131.99 (while all repairs theyve done for me have fallen within that it may be worth getting an actual quote from Sigma first).

yeah I got a quote at £98.99. Have given the seller this thread link, plus the video and he's apologised. Says he uses it for manual focus video only and only took a few photos but never noticed. The ball is in his court but hopefully I'll get to own either this or another copy soon as I really like it.

I've upgraded 3 lenses recently (mainly for video), the 50mm 1.4 to the 50mm 1.2, the canon 28mm 1.8 to the samyang 35mm 1.4 and this canon 85mm 1.8 to this sigma and aside from this issue, I couldnt be happier with the 3 trades.

The lens is pretty new so still under warrenty - previous owner can send it to sigma for repair

yep that is indeed one of the options
