Righty then, i'm looking for a telephoto lens to follow on from my 18-70mm lens for my D200.

I have only ever purchased Nikon lenses before but think I need a change! The Sigma 70-300mm seems to be very popular, and for £100 it sounds like a steal. Are there any other alternatives worth looking at? I see that Tamaron do a 70-300mm a little cheaper too but this doesnt seems to be quite as popular?

Anyone got any recomendations? Would also like to see some shots taken at 300mm if poss?

Thanks in advance :D

Aha! Didnt notice the difference? Sorry if its a silly question, whats the APO version all about? :)

Hmmmm, sounds good to me! I think its £109.99 on onestop-digital at the mo.

Has anyone used the Tamaron? Any thoughts on this one? :)

spend a little more and go for the nikon 70-300 VR. Its about £250 at the moment which is a steal. I would own one already if I wasn't after f/2.8

I have been thinking about the Nikon VR but its over twice the price. Cant really justify the VR for an extra £140.

you need to take handling, build quality, and superior image quality into the equation too. Its not a sigma equivilant with VR stuck on :)

Dont tempt me

Most of what I do is landscape anyway so I dont really need a high quality telephoto. I'm looking at the sigma purley because of the price and wouldnt mind the extra reach every now and then :)

The Sigma is the best lens for the price, and I mine has got me some good shots in the past, but I havent used it at all since I got my Canon 70-200 F4L IS - and to be honest I havent missed the extra 100mm at the long end. I am guessing you are finding your 200mm too short for some stuff?

Well I actually sold my 200mm to my dad, I can still use it but I wouldnt mind one of my own just incase we both need to use them at the same time. For when we go to Chester Zoo! :)

You can have mine for £ 75 + pp
A1 condition, boxed blah blah :)

I have the 70-300 VR and it is a cracker of a lens (just read the instructions for the VR - I was using it wrong for ages :bang:) well worth the money IMO.

I've found the VR to be an absolute godsend especially in lower light such as when I was in Formby shooting Red Squirrels (see my Flickr Pages for a couple of examples). Remember that the true cost of something is the difference between the price you pay and the price you sell it for, the 70-300VR will always have a much higher resale price to the Sigma and you'll get more good shots out of it. Plus you may also find someone who's just upgraded wanting to sell their old one so you don't take the inital depreciation hit.

As you are only just up the road if you want convincing PM me and we can arrange a time for you to try the 70-300 VR

When I was in the market for a budget telephoto I weighed up between the Siggy APO and the Nikon VR, go play with a the Nikon in a shop and you will realise where the extra cash goes, it simply feels, looks and is the better lens. (And yes, for me th price difference would have been justified.) I will also say that I was startled by just how low I could go with the VR shutter speed wise.

Still, I don't own either, I'm aiming for a 100-300 f/4 Sigma.

blah blah..

I started with the Tamron 70-300mm, then got the Sigma 70-300mm APO, and I'm buying the Sigma 100-300mm f/4 on Friday!!

Go with the Sigma APO, best value for money out there...

Thanks Lurch but I think if I do go for this one then I'll probably buy a new one with them being so cheap.

When I bought the Nikkor 55-200mm with VR, I agree the VR is awesome but I never really got my moneys worth out of it and I didnt really use the VR that much tbh either.
