Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has used this lens. If so what do you think of it?

Thanks.

I have one - it's a pretty good lens, although sometimes it can throw out a inconsistent result it is generally sharp, good colour and very little CA. I used to use it a lot, however it's recently been superseeded by a canon 70-200 F4 L and a Sigma 120-400.

Focus can be a little slow, but it's accurate. The lens can be a little soft at full zoom wide open, but works well in the from F8 onwards throughout the zoom (not uncommon for budget zooms). I tried the canon and tamron versions and found the sigma to be the best (marginally). Hope this helps - not much else to add other than it's a good lens for the money and does produce good results

Thanks. THat really helped.

I'm thinking of taking birds in flight. Do you think it mite be a bit to slow?

It's a good lens for the money, but focus will be a bit too slow I reckon for focus tracking birds in flight.

I had one and replaced it with a Canon 70 300 IS USM. Optically the Canon is a significant step up, and it has USM. But then again it's more expensive...

i can agree with the comments above, sharp good colour and low CA. Focus is a little slow for birds in flight and physical sports (rugby, hockey etc) but I have managed to get decent results from rugby. It is fine for motor sport.

The only thing i don't like is the maximum apertures are a little slow for the UK, unless there is good, strong light i find myself bumping up the iso, even in the middle of the day. However that is hardly a criticism of the lens and will be the same for any f/4-5.6 lens.

You could consider the canon 55-250 IS, purely for the IS (and it is slightly sharper) This is great in most situations but wouldn't be a great help with birds in flight, and if you are shooting birds on the ground i know you'll want every last one of the 300mm's the sigma offers.

Edit, the macro function is also great, producing sharp images with smooth bokeh, something the canon cannot do.
