Hi

i have considering a 70-200 f2.8 lens and cannot afford the Nikon equivalent. Which of these third party lens is the best on a Nikon D90?
Is it the tamron or the Sigma which is better?
On a different note i was looking at the Nikon 70-300mm VR lens as i would like the extra reach for Formula 1 photography. I could buy the Sigma 70-200 and buy a 1.4 teleconverter but not sure if this would be any better?
Recommendations or advice appreciated.

i cannot speak from experience as such, but a mate of mine tried out both the sigma and tamron 70-200 F2.8 lens at focus on imaging, and i would say that the tamron was sharper throughout the range than the sigma, but AF was slightly noisier and a tad slower on the tamron.sorry, can't offer any advice on the 70-300 VR,as i'm a sony alpha user, but i use a 1.4X teleconverter with my sony 70-200 2.8 and the results are outstanding, although i don't do much motorsport..

if its any use we have 2 of the sigmas, the first of the "macro" versions and we have no complaints. sharp all the way through the range, AF is lightning quick. thats for general sport use, did a rally the other week and kept up nicely.

I too own the Sigma, the mk II version. It's a very, very nice lens indeed. Sharp throughout, very quick and silent focusing.

I can't comment on the Tamron, only that I've read the focus isn't as fast as the siggy so if it's for sports, the siggy may be the better option.

+1 for the sigma. I've got one and its lovely. Planning on getting a couple of tc's too making the siggy a very versatile setup :)

Can't comment on the tameron as I've never had one.

I also have a couple of Sigma's and they perform without fault

70-200mm f2.8 & 105mm Macro f2.8

Les ;)

No complaints about my Sigma 70-200 either.
