Hi

i have just had delivered a new Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM 11 Macro (non OS) lens from Jessops and first impressions are - Great !!!!
I have had a quick "play" in the garden with it and it feels great attached to my Nikon D90.What i have noticed apart from the weight of the lens is that when holding the camera with the attached there is more chance of camera shake when hand holding. The main reason i have bought this is for motorsport / indoor sports.
Apart from using a tripod / monopod which i have both from Manfrotto, what tips are there to reduce camera shake when hand holding this set up? What do other users of this lens do to try and avoid camera shake?

Thanks

Have a look on YouTube for Joe mcnally's hand holding technique, results in a very stable platform which can make a massive difference. You need to be a left eye focuser though, and a gripped or pro body with integral grip will help. Search for 'joe McNally grip' and you should find it.

Thanks jpw. interesting video. Will give it a try. Not sure on left eye viewing but seems logical enough!!

a good firm stance, like the mcnally vid get your left elbow tucked into your abdomen to form a solid platform for the lens.

otherwise, practice. the missus has had a sig 70-200 for about a year now and she can get consistantly steady shots.

Keep the shutter speed up to avoid camera shake. Has the D90 got auto ISO? If so set a minimum shutter speed and let the camera move the ISO around however it feels....Plus the good firm stance as well...

Use this as an excuse to get the battery grip you always wanted! In all seriousness, I find the vertical grip makes my 70-200 more hand holdable. But with a good stance and practice you'll quickly be able to steady it well!

Congrats on the new toy!

when breathing breathe in then try take the shot and hold your breath if you can at the same time.

Rest it across your opposite elbow (horizontal)while gripping your camera held forearm, i have the same lens non OS, non macro, but the new one is the same price as the Nikon version , just shows what a great lens it is for the money.
Release the shutter at the top of your breath this is when your body is at its most still.

I find using my 70-200 2.8 is a little like sniping, my face sometimes goes blue before I release the shutter!

I technique I take over to macro shooting as well....

Indeed, it's supurb!
