Hi, I'm looking at getting a used sigma 70-200 f/2.8 off of eBay and I can't afford the os version of this lens.
The trouble is, I'm not 100% sure how many versions there are, so far I've managed to count 3.
There is what I would call version I of this lens, hsm v.II and the OS version.
Ideally I would prefer v.I purely because it's cheaper and I'm on a budget. But I only have a Nikon d3100 so the lens needs a in-built focus motor. Can anyone tell me how many versions there are and whether they all have the in built focus motor?

Thanks!

I have been looking at this very same lens and to date have found these

Sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO IF (older grey plastic body)
Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX DG black coated lens
Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX DG Macro black coated and closer focusing to previous model
Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX DG MKII black coated better focusing than MKI
Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX DG OS latest model with stabilization.

As for the question regarding built in AF motors i have no idea but would love to know as i am looking at a D3200.

on a Sigma for in-lens motor you need to look for one with HSM in it's title.

I contacted Sigma and they put me onto their "history" page on their website.

The one i got is 70-200 f2.8 HSM EX DG mkii and it have build in motor.

For Sigma lens i think you need to look for the word HSM on the lens for build in motor i think.

Further reply from Sigma.

"Any HSM lens will AF on your Nikon D3100. Some of the older models of lenses may require a firmware upgrade for use with the D3100, as that particular camera body is quite new, the firmware may be out dated in older lenses.

We can upgrade that firmware in most cases. Should you require clarification on the firmware of a particular lens, let me know and I can double check this for you."
