Sigma bolsters its top-end EX range with the announcement of a HSM focusing-motor-equipped 50mm f/1.4 lens. Offering a moderate telephoto field of view on APS-C cameras, Sigma's DG designation means it will also work as a standard lens on full-frame digital cameras. We believe this is the first time a 50mm f/1.4 lens has been offered with a ring-type focus motor. Pricing and availability information to follow as soon as we have it.

Interesting... does any manufacturer not offer a full-frame 50mm f1.4 already? I hope it's as good as the 30mm, but I would never buy the 50mm over the 30mm (I only got my 50mm because it was cheaper than the Sigma 30mm).

It would have to be something very very special to beat the Canon 50mm 1.4, even canon's own 50mm 1.2 L struggles
 
Wonder how good this will be, I've been thinking about a 50mm 1.4 for a while... Will wait and see what the pricing is like.

Yeah, and so does Pentax's, and Nikon's. Sorry if I was unclear - what I was trying to say was:

As far as I know, every manufacturer makes a full-frame 50mm f1.4 lens already.
 
So, the D40/D40x/d60 owners, DO get the nifty fifty they want..:)
 
A little bump for this thread, anybody have any idea how much this is gonna cost, or a release date yet? I can't see the point of sigma releasing this unless it destroys anything else on the market, so im very interested!
 
I think we can safely say it'll be about half the price of the similar model from Canon and Nikon ( they are normally ) and I think that will be the point.

When you say "destroy anything else on the market" I assume you mean on price. From my own experience Sigma lenses aren't up to the same standard as similar Nikon lenses optically, close yes, cheaper yes, but not quite as good.

The only other thing I can think of that this lens will have over the nikon will be HSM, as the nikon version doesn't have AFS. But then unless you have a low price body without a lens motor this wont really matter, it's hardly like you need a 50mm lens that can keep up with a racecar :lol:

I think it will be more expensive than the Nikon or Canon equivalent because of the HSM. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is £260 from warehouseexpress and I would expect the 50mm to be priced similar or slightly cheaper.

I don't know about nikon but there is no reason it should be dearer that the canon, it already has USM.

Canon 50mm 1.4 is micro USM not ring USM. Sigma with ring type should be faster, quieter and better for manual focusing. If it's anything like the 30mm, it's every bit as good as a Canon.

I agree, I wouldn't expect this to be more the Canon. 50mm is supposed to be a relatively easy focal length to engineer, and hence should be cheap. This is in contrast to 30mm where the FL is relatively difficult to achieve, especially at large apertures. (One way of reducing cost is to cater to crop sensors, and have a smaller image circle. Consider the the price differential between sigma 30mm 1.4 and canon 35mm 1.4.)

The 50mm Sigma is definately one to keep an eye on in my opinion.
