Sigma 50-500mm is it the right lens

Hi guys i have a question for you all. I'm looking at maybe getting the 50-500MM sigma lens. But wont to know if its going to be the right lens for the job.

I was looking to buy the lens for days out at the zoo and thats about it. So would this lens be a cracking lens for the job are would you guys pick some other lens ?. I was looking at the 50-500MM because of the amount of zoom its got 50mm. Up close 500mm for the long of shot and the lens would be hand haled.

Looks like i maybe better of just getting a 2x TC for my 70-200mm so 400mm @f5.6
