My new toy, the 300mm F2.8 (fixed) EX HSM Sigma prime arrived today. Here -

Literally had a look at it and not a lens to 'walk around the house' with. Bought in readiness for a winters worth of saturday afternoons football/rugby coverage. Budget would not manage the Canon 2.8 IS however the long term goal is to get used to working prime and then maybe, just maybe seek the Canon out in the future.

However, first impressions are sound and this may negate any such need to change at a later date.

Without sounding like a desk jockey, it has superb build quality, excellent feel and looks great. Quite why Sigma get such a rough deal is a shame as this really is nice. :)

Focus is fast, very fast, literally silent, far quieter than the 100 - 400L. It is a lot heavier than anything else I have worked with which stands to reason with all the glass evident. The removal of the monopod collar will lessen the load. Hand held is fine. The palm of my left hand rounds the lens hood superbly and feels natural and not at all top heavy. The bokeh out of this thing is magical.

I will conclude this brief intro with some quick 'out the front door' shots. The acid test will be this weekend as working in Sheffield in low light with the monopod. Results to follow.

In summary, at £1500.00 I am one happy snapper. This is the right lens for me now. Lovely colours before and after PP, snappy, sharp and will be a delight in both low and average light but fab in great light. Roll on next summer :D

Handheld, 1/200, 2.8, ISO 1600. ( exscuse the 30D average high ISO) just a test.

Handheld, 1/1600, 2.8, ISO 1600.

Handheld, 1/400, 2.8, ISO 1000.

Looks good Diego, Sigma really has some quality glass out just now :)

Looks good , would love it for wildlife stuff but how do you use a prime for Football etc ?. I found 70mm to be to long depending on the action on the pitch , do you have to practice running backwards to get the correct framming for the shot ??? ;)

Its a valid point actually. Its all about positioning at the match and using the framing to the best of your ability and the old crop tool if required.

After research at various venues and working with others I was able to note that prime is where it is at and 2.8.

Diego.

Thanks mate, I recall our chat a while back. I now know prime is where its at mate, your stuff is superb, hence my investment in a decent prime.

I look forward to see the results  , my son plays football and I've been known to take a photo or two(hundred). I would probably have to sell him to buy the lens though.....

Looks like a very good piece of glass, certainly looks the business - both from the sample shots and the product shots, so whats the weight of that thing ? ;)
