Sigma 300mm 2.8 v Canon 300mm f4

Has anybody compared these 2 lenses against each other for speed of focus etc, I have the canon f4 and was thinking upgrading so that i can get the 2.8. I mainly shoot football and need the 2.8 for night games. Just wundering what the focus speed is like on the Sigma, or should wait and get the Canon 2.8.

Canon definatly, there are some quality control issues with the sigma prime.

I had both for a while but sold the sigma. It was great when it got a good focus lock but struggled more often than not, even on relatively static subjects like cricketers. I had a belter of a Canon 300/4 and it was tack sharp. But it seems that is the norm, rather than an exception.

you can hand hold a 300 f4 all day long mine was absoloutly fantastic... it was a stop gap while my sigma 120-300 was being fixed... it opened up a whole new world.. sold the siggy and got a canon 300 prime..

but the 300 f4.... seriously good lens IMHO

Wait for the money for the Canon 300 2.8 - super lens. Try and keep the f/4 if you can - a very handy lens as Tony says.

Or get the sigma 120-300 rather than the 300mm. Zoom, sharper and with less quality control issues than the prime.
