Hi all,

I am looking to change my 300 f4 for either a Sigma 300 2.8 prime latest model or the 120-320 2.8 new S model. Which one would people recommend, I hear the zoom is sharper but wonder if the prime is better for my set up as I will also have the 70-200 2.8 on another body?

I have used the 2011 120-300 I think and was not that impressed, is the sports model as good as the reviews says and is it worth the extra money against the 300 prime?

I shoot sports mainly rugby, bit of football and other sports.

Cheers

If you can afford the S - Sport model then don't hesitate, the old non sport was sharper than the prime and the sport I hear is an amazing lens and you have the flexibility of the zoom range too. Ive heard some die hard Nikon 200-400 guys have changed to it as with a 1.4x TC it becomes 180-420 f4 with very little image degregation. I have not tried one but had the older DG version (non os) and was really happy with it and do miss it and like a sport model too

Thanks both, think I would still need the 70-200 for tries near me and celebration shots, but I would give it a go trying not to use one!

It amazes me that the zoom is sharper than the prime. All the reviews seem to say the new sport is amazing, just doesn't seem to be many reviews comparing it with the prime directly which is why I wanted to ask on here.

I bought a new 120-300 recently to replace a 300 and I'm really pleased with it. What I found after the first games with it was that, thanks to the zoom, I took about 40% more shots. The 70-200 doesn't get much use now, when it was away for repair for a couple of weeks I put a 28-70 on the second body and found that just as useful.

Wow looking at Gary's thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/european-le-mans-series-imola.543386/#post-6294876 I wonder is these were with the 120-300?

yup, mainly...
i love my 120-300 - wouldnt change it for the world.
however, its not that good with a TC, even a 1.4 (dont bother with 2.0)

i recently received the USB dock, and can now twiddle with the settings, and what was a great lens is now awesome. It works well with the 1.4x now, and the focussing is very very good.. I used to take two shots of cars coming head on, and in most case the second shot was the sharper, but since I've tuned it I only need one shot now.
