Just about to buy a Sigma to replace my Canon EF 24-85 F3.5-4.5.

Does anyone have any experience of the 2 lenses?

I prefer the pysical size of the 28-70, I need something to compliment my nifty 50 at gigs.

If you are at gigs the 2.8 will be vital! I have the Sigma, and while it's not amazing at low light focussing, it get the job done usually.
 
cheers 28-70 or 24-70?

cant see the any major difference in the 2 apart from the physical size and macro capability of the 24-70 (which I dont need)
 
24-70 sorry...the macro ain't really macro, at least in the terms I understand it!

Is that purely based on the slightly wider angle of the 24?

If thats the only difference I think the 28 would swing it because:

It is the same at the long end
Its a physically smaller lens
24-28 is not massive just a step backwards
Cheaper filters

If there is anything else to consider please chip in
 
Out of the Sigma 24-60, the 24-70 and the 28-70 in order of goodness you're looking at:

1) Sigma 24-60
2) Sigma 24-70
3) Sigma 28-70

The Sigma 28-70 is only 3rd because there is nothing worse above it ;)

Its really the runt of the litter, unless they have MASSIVELY improved it with a DG re-spin.
 
I have just got the 24-70, I haven't really tried it out properly yet, it's a hefty lens i bought it to replace my Canon 17-85 is. Ive only really tried it in poor light so far and have been quite impressed for the price, the motors quite noisy but it will focus on my black dog in very poor light reasonably quickly which is something the 17-85is would never do and it seems pretty sharp so far need to have a bit more play with it though as I was hand holding with 1 hand at 1/50 to expose the background and lighting my dog with a flash held in my other hand so cant really say how sharp it is yet but will test some more tomorrow.

If you want cheaper filters, get yourself a filter holder, and some filters. £10 for an adapter ring.

Oh, and if you're worrying about the weight and the size of the 24-70, wait till you can get the new version. It's much smaller and lighter apparently. Who knows about the IQ atm though.

Thanks........ is that based on personal experience?

The 24-60 is discontinued now I believe, so that really leaves the 24-70.

Could well be a trip to jessops in the morning, unless a 24-60 pops up on ebay?

How much do they go for used?

Yes. Two on Nikon fit, one on Canon fit (24-60).

The 24-60 was the best lens. Jessops are doing the 24-70 for a decent price at the moment.

The new HSM version coming soon is going to be around £650, so double the price of the current one.
 
Personally I'd chuck the 17-70 into that mix too - every bit as sharp as the lenses mentioned, cheaper and more versatile. The only issue will be f4 at the long end, but it's only an extra stop and might be able to be compensated for in other ways?

The 24-70 is a beaut of a lens though, but I haven't had good experiences with the 28-70 - both of the ones I had (on approval) were soft as custard.

Where did you get that price from?.

It would be suicide for Sigma to double the price of the lens, the current one is sold on the basis of 90% of the performance for 33% of the price compared to Canon. I'd never have bought my Sigma stuff if it was close to the Canon L prices :)

Sigma are VERY confident in this lens and its optics. It could be worth it.

You might get 110% of the performance for 90% of the price :)

Seems a daft thing to do really....although it'll be still a couple of hundred short of high street 24-70 L prices it is an outrageous increase in price for what will no doubt be a HSM addition and perhaps a couple of minor tweaks!

Unless they've completely gone to town with it of course...:thinking:
 
That would make me strongly consider purchasing one right now without HSM - I never use autofocus, so now would appear to be the time to buy!

Yea, it'll be a bargain if it's true! Picked mine up for Jessops brand new for £220 (with promo code) about 6 months ago :)

Hmmm , can't imagine it going down well at all. Can you imagine Ford doubling the price of the Mondeo and telling people that it's because it's now better than a BMW??. Would people switch to buying the Ford or would people carry on spending the same amount of cash & move to Vauxhall etc ??

Its true - wait and see, you should be able to get the new version end January 2008.

The pricing is due to 3 reasons - one is the exchange rate, Sigma prices will be going up between 12 and 15% next year. This price hike is already factored into the new version. Ie it won't go any higher, and will actually drop a bit.

The other reasons are the all new optical formulation, and the HSM motor which is the first time Sigma has put their full HSM (with FTMF) into this sort of lens.

It feels a bit high to me - but if its optically as good as I'm hearing on the grapevine, then it'll actually be a bargain.
 
TBH, if the price is going to be ~£600, that's straight into Canon 24-70 territory.

I'd spend the extra, and get the canon if it's going to be that much, and i wanted that lens.

At what focal length does it start to go above 2.8 please?
 
I've just ordered a 24-70mm from Jessops. With Quidco cashback and the quidco 5% discount code it works out at approx £216. Cant complain at that really!

About 17.47mm. And its f4.5 at the long end, not f4.
I have one, and tbh, sounds like the 24-70/60 would be better for you.

Just got my 24-70mm f/2.8 this morning. Superb lens for the money. The build quality is definitely nowhere near that of the Nikon 24-70mm I have had a go with, but for £216 I wasnt expecting it! I seem to have gotten a nice sharp version so am over the moon!!
 
Managed to get a used 24-60 quite a bit cheaper than a new 24-70 from Jessops so it was an easy decision in the end:thumbs:

  1. Nobody will believe it
  2. It will be the wrong colour
  3. It won't have a red stripe
  4. will it have the same build quality that Canon is said to have

I think 99% would agree with Jelster, why take the risk when the extra £150 will "guarantee" you quality.

Glad you said that...hubby is on his way home from jessops right now with the same lens for me!!! :woot:(canon version) .

Very good price btw, i paid £224 online with £10 off voucher - will check out quidco for future though
 
I recently got the 24-70mm and I have to say that it is very heavy and I think its a bit soft wide open at 70mm but perhaps thats just the AF being a bit off.

Its not perfect but not bad for the price.

The weight swung the 24-60 in my favour its quite a smaller lens, especially when you consider it will live on a 350d with no grip. I dont think I'll miss 10mm at the long end
 
I called Sigma on 23rd Dec as I am looking at a 24-70 and wanted to know if they had a UK release date.
They told me early Jan 09 and the price was in the region of £650rrp too. Non hsm for me I'm afraid. If I could afford that I would also get the Canon 24-70.

The Canon 24-70 is one of the best they make (optically speaking) so I would be surprised if the Sigma would be better, and the build quality of the Canon is excellent.

Don't get me wrong, I have the Sigma version and it's a very good lens, and the Canon isn't 3 times better so I couldn't justify the cost. However, if the Sigma was to cost around the £650 mark it wouldn't be a contest.
