Been looking at this lens for a bit now to use both for close up sports and indoor shots. The 18-200VR is okay for a walk around/travel lens but not fast enough for cricket/footy/lacrosse.

Has anyone got any good/bad/indifferent tales about this lens. For £260, I can't find anything else near this. All the Nikon lenses of a similar size & f/2.8 are all nearly a grand.

Cheers,

Adam.

I think Petemc has one of these? I was also thinking about getting this lens. As you say the Nikon equivalent is 1K and its slightly wider at 28-70 if I remember corrrectly. But it is tack sharp.

have heard reports of the AF being a tad slow on this lens but apart from that I've heard very good things about it.

Ed :)

I had one about 3 years ago and AF was very slow (is newer one HSM?) I was happy with pictures but not good for fast moving stuff so swapped it for Canon 24-70

Just checked on Warehouse Express and it's not HSM. Would love to get the Nikon 28-70 f/2.8 AFS but it's nearly £1100

If your using it for slower moving subjects e.g potraiture, press work you should be fine, I'm still questioning the quickness of the AF...........has a mind of its own at times :suspect: and It hunts in extremly low light.

Heres an image I took in studio with it, very sharp lens with out a question :)

How about the tamron 17-50 2.8 nikon fit? I have that, selling it to put towards nikon 17-55 2.8, and it really is excellent. Gives you a different range but really is an excellent lens. Check the reviews.

I've got the 24-70 and love it. No HSM and focus can be a tad slow sometimes and it is a bit noisy but nice and sharp through the range. I'd recommend it

I do have one. Its nice and sharp. However, its also not as quick to focus as a HSM / USM lens. It is noisy if you work in quiet places. It can hunt occasionally. My current one's front end has gone a bit wobbly too. The build quality isn't Canon's. So in the end it really is a budget lens with the sharpness of the Canon, imho. If you can live with those issues buy it. I've been more than happy with the shots I've got over the past year with mine.

Love mine - had it a good few months now and apart from my speedway stuff it is on the camera most of the time. Cracking lens - I've not noticed the AF either being slow, or noisy, OR hunting even in low light!

I tested the 28-70 a while back and did think the focus was a bit slow but nothing to worry about - although for sports it could be an issue. IQ was top notch tho

I am reliably informed that this lens is now discontinued and there is a SWM version coming out mid summer at about £270. I am on the waiting list!
