Yes
I'm wanting a new lens, but not sure which to get, I was reading about the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC, anybody got it?

Opinions would be appreciated :D

I've got one on my canon. Supposedly its not as sharp as the tamron version, but i got mine for €100 so really can fault it in the slightest :D
It suits my needs perfectly and was great replacement for the kit lens

I've been using one for the past two years with no complaints whatsoever... It's my preferred wedding and portrait lens. Razor sharp and nicely contrasty too! It's a lens I'd recommend to anyone! :)

Hope that helps,
Si

Hm, i hate making decisions on lenses! i want it mostly for portrait shots, that sort of thing.
The Tamron looks pretty good, I've not owned a Sigma lens before either, only ever had Nikon or Tamron, makes me think I should stick with another Tamron, but magazines seem to like the Sigma! So confusing!

I might have to head down to Jessops and see if they'll let me try some out...

you could get the tamrons bigger brother the 28-75mm its perfect range for portraits. with a 17-50mm the only usable range really is the 50mm end of the lens whereas the 28-75mm can be usable pretty much at every focal length.

I sold one on here a couple of weeks back and prior to selling it my dad used it for a while and got some cracking results with it.

I have it, it's nice on a crop body and the HSM motor is nice too! Altho haven't used it a great deal, as I have 30/50/85 1.4 primes too so kinda don't really need it!
Only problem is not sure how it now compares to the newest tamron 17-50 VC...

I had to choose between the sigma 18-50 and the tamron 17-50 a while ago.
Loved the HSM on the Sigma, but image quality won and went with the Tamron.
The AF on the tamron can be a bit noisy at times, and I had to tighten the screws holding the front element, but apart from that it's a cracking lens.

Just looked at the Tamron 28-75, I'm drawn towards that, especially as I'll be able to use basically every focal length.

I think I'm going to try both of them out, just to see which I prefer before actually buying one...

Thanks guys :D

I can see a problem there with your d5000. It wont autofocus with any non AF-S lenses. You might be stuck with Sigma 18-50 HSM for that reason.
A few of them are good, you need to cherry pick a one very carefully.

I didn't think of that actually...
This is going to be tough :(

I had a Sigma 18-50 and loved it, although like Kanine, I sold it as I have 30mm and 50mm f/1.4 primes. I do miss it though, particularly the close focus ability - it has macro of sorts, 1:3 I think, which is quite handy.

I have had one for a couple of weeks now and can't recommend it highly enough, it's very quick to focus and ultra sharp even at it's widest aperture, you won't regret buying it.

what about considering the sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5? Pretty good write ups on it...

Was in the same dilemma myself a few weeks ago. I looked at the Sigma one you are talking about, the 17-70, a Tokina and the Tamron 18-50 f2.8

In the end I decided to go for the Tamron.

Best place I could find for it was onestopdigital at £250. However, when I eventually went to buy it (on Sunday) they were out of stock!!!

As if by magic, someone on here was selling one that very same night!!! A quick bit of negotiating saw me picking that up for £215 !

Lens arrived this morning and I have had a very good play with it. The sharpness is absolutely immense. I know everyone always goes on about sharpness with this lens - but to see it first hand is absolute quality - the difference is amazing!!!

On a side note, I have found the AF very fast and not noticed the noise it makes!

So my advice ... go for the Tammy !!!

Cheers

Anth

I tried the Sigma 18-50 and the Tamron 17-50. I prefered the Tammy's images, less warm than the Sigma BUT I couldn't live with the nasty noisy Tammy, so bought the Sigma.

Use it a fair bit, its OK. Couldn't justify the Nikon price tag for a short general purpose lens.

I'm moving more towards the Tamron now, most people on here and friends of mine all rave about it. Will probably go for that, they're great lenses, had a few before.

I'll buy a sigma one day...Maybe :)

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I tried both, although sigma feel better built, the tamron is sharper in my opinion..

I would go with the the tamron, sharper, 1mm wider (a lot I know) and looks a whole lot better.

Am I wrong in thinking the Tamron has quite noticeable distortion at the wide end compared to the Sigma?

I sold my Sigma 18-50 yesterday with the intention of going the 24-70 route. As soon as I'd posted it I wondered why I was such a plum as to sell my favorite lens and am now looking for the same again..

Or maybe the Tammy this time.
