I'd be surprised if you shot product images at F1.8 so you may be better buying a more 'standard' 17-50 range 2.8 lens. Paying the extra for 1.8 constant isn't really going to be much benefit when you'll be shooting at narrower apertures.
Thanks for your reply Steve. That would be my choice, apart from the Missus has the (excellent) Sigma 17-50 f2.8 so I have access to it already
In fact she has a great selection on lenses that I've bought her over the last few years, so all normal focal lengths are covered quite well. I'm just moving (back) to Canon and my intention is to generally use her glass.
I should have mentioned in my OP that I will also be videoing a lot. I know with my Sony gear I struggled sometimes with video at f4 - so figured f2.8 on on a crop could be similar. I had planned to buy a good prime at around 30-35mm to combat this. Looking at the Sigma Art's, it seems the 30mm f1.4 is brilliant for the price (£350ish), but has a little barrel distortion. Easy to correct in photos, but possibly a pain in video. So I looked at the excellent Sigma 35mm Art. Great lens at a good price IMO (about £600). Then started reading up on the 18-35 f1.8 which is a little less than the 35mm (£550) and offers a bit more range.
I could probably get through with the Missus's 17-50, but then there will be times when we both need to use this focal length. Plus, the 17-50 doesn't have full time manual focus like the 18-35, making it a little less flexible (again in video). Besides, it would be nice to have one lens which was mine
I think I'll take the guess work out of this and go and try this lens (and others that fit my needs) in a shop. I'll take a small product, light and small background with me as this is what has to be very good. I can then go back to my camper and compare the images before deciding what to get.
