The Nikon lens has a variable maximum aperture of f3.5 to f5.6 too.
As with all superzooms, you get some distortion and softening at certain focal lengths. If you want the ultimate in sharpness and lack of barrel/pincushion distortion don't use a superzoom. Having said that I use an 18-200 myself as a standard "walkabout on holiday" lens, and its fine for this.
