Any good?

Thinking ahead for my step-sisters wedding next year, my dad will be main photog so may be able to beat him and steal his 18-200 VR for a play but I only have kit lens or 70-300 in my bag.

Would this be good for general shots of the day or is there a better option? It is over in Greece, would assume there will be indoor shots as well as outdoor.

Money is a factor, I don't have a lot but have time to save.

Might it be better to go prime and low light like a 50mm 1.8?

Lens use after the event would be nice, don't really want it as a one off thing but I could always sell it after if need be.

Thanks, sorry for rambling. :)

I cant comment on the lens in question - but would definately recommend something like the 50mm 1.8 as a backup incase the lights very poor, also its very low cost with very good quality - ideal for portraits and candids.
A prime on its own though would probably be restrictive.

Cool, will probably try and grab a 50mm 1.8 sooner rather than later and save for a short zoom as well.

Any suggestions welcome.

p3 - I had the Sigma you were looking at having bought it as a stopgap waiting for the Nikon VR version (which I now have) - for the money its decent enough but I felt it was a bit "lightweight" even on my D50 - It also has a switch on it to stop the lens "creeping" when you carry it (which it will do if you don't use the switch) which I found annoying as I kept forgetting about it (doh!) - IMHO if you have a kit lens & a 70-300mm the 18-200mm would be a luxury extra and unless you can fork out for Nikon VR one - I'd get the Nikon 50mm as recommended already
btw I now only have the Nikon 18-200mm VR and I really miss the 200-300mm range which is making me rethink & I MIGHT even go BACK to two lenses because of this :bang: - Damn frustrating at times this "uprgaditis nervosa" ... Paul

Thanks for the info mate. Believe me if i could afford it i would just buy the 18-200 VR Nikon as well.

For a budget 18-200 you have the choice between the Sigma and the Tamron equivalent.

The verdict on Nikonians seems to be the Sigma, but Amatuer Photgrapher seems to disagree. They rated them as follows:

Sigma
For:
Exceptional zoom span
Good outlines/sharpness
Good ergonomics
Value for money
Against
Shorter actual focal length span
Warmish colour

Spec 28/30
Build 18/20
Handling 18/20
Performance 20/30
Overall 84%

Tamron
For
Exceptional zoom span
Fuller focal length range
High resolution
Accurate colour
Value for money

Against
Longer lens barrel
Drawing at 18mm

Spec 28/30
Build 16/20
Handling 15/20
Performance 26/30

Overall 85%.

Taken from 18 June 2005 issue.

Hope this helps.

Marosser - I understand that teleconverters cannot be used with lenses that go as wide as that (i.e. 18mm) - certainly when I had the Sigma 18-200mm it was not on the approved list (here) on the Sigma UK site for use with their t/c ...
