Hey,

As you know im new round here and just invested in a Canon 400D. I have been told that the above Sigma Lens would see me good. Is this true? Its about £300

I know nothing about lenese by the way.

Cheers.

This is what I was wondering. I personaly dont have a problem with buying a few different lenses, I want quality for sure.

What would you recomend as a basic keep me going collection of lenese?

For Ex
One for close up Macro Stuff
One for landscape kinda work
One for Animal (big Zoom)

Cheers.

I'm not specifically familiar with this lens but I've just had a look at it on Sigma's website and it looks like a nice lens. The OS feature is always useful. As Joe says though, I'd be a bit sceptical about it's sharpness considering the zoom range

You could cater for all of the above with The Sigma 17-70 and the Canon 70-300 IS USM. I've got them both and they're excellent, sensibly priced lenses. Both have received very good reviews.

First comments:
- Long zoom ranges = low(er) quality {already stated}
- F6.3 at the long end is quite slow... need lotsa light.

If you only want 1 lens then consider it.
However if you are looking for quality (and therefore quantity of lenses) then look elsewhere. IMHO.

It looks to be about as I expected

Cool, I think I would rather, have quality, that is for sure, so have no worries having a few lenses in the bag, just will take a bit longer to get everthign together, with costs and stuff. But dont want to rush into anything. :)

Don't overlook the Canon 50mm f1.8 MkII by the way. Commonly refered to as the nifty fifty. It's a must have lens for any Canon owner. It's incredibly sharp and excellent in low light as it stops down to f1.8. The best bit.....it costs around £65 :D . It feels like it's made by Fisher Price but what a lens for the money! It's a prime lens (fixed focal length) at 50mm but on the 400D will give the equivalent of 80mm due to the 1.6 crop factor.

If you fancy one try Kerso. A member on TPF or contact him through his Ebay store here

Wow, cool, never even thought something so cheap would be any good.

Very good review. I have contacted the ebay man, and we shall see what he can do for me on price :)

I've got the sigma 18-200, I bought it for my recent trip to canada, as i didn't want to carry multiple lenses around. It's not a bad lens for the money, a little soft at 200, but at 18 it's not bad. Most of the pics on my site are taken using using it.

Can highly recommend the "nifty fifty", every canon owner should have one of these in their bag.

edit: oh if you want to look at the pre-processed images from the camera with the sigma let me know.

Tony

You got some lovely shots on your site there my friend. I have ordered the nifty fifty. £65 delivered. Cant say no really now can I :)

The 50mm feels cheap and lightweight when you get your hands on it, but you'll be suprised how good the PQ is.

The sigma isn't bad and produces some decent results, but i think i'll be looking to replace it in the long run. Got a tokina 17mm on order, (like rocking horse sh!t now). Also looking at the canon 70-300 USM, keeping my options open on that one though.

Very nice, I have spent all mornign reading up on many lenses, and trying to get my head round all these new things. Seems to me, that whatever I buy I will want one better, lol, thats llife I know. Everyone seems to have there ideas on best ones, etc.

For now, I will have a play with the new nifty jobbie, and the one that comes with the 400D. Then decide on what to buy next. Would rather wait a bot longer and get a quality lens, then spash out on something not quite upto the job and have to sell it later.

Just go the whole hog and buy:

17-40mm f4 L
24-70mm f2.8 L USM
70-200 f2.8 IS L
100-400 f4 L
1.4TC
2.0TC

You'll only need about £5K

... dunno...
Pretty obvious selection I'd have thought. :D

hehe. yeah totally, now where is that Credit Card ;)

The Mrs would KILL me if I did :)

missed out the 500 f4 for those occasions when nothing else will do. :p

that sigma certainly isn't bad tho, i was quite impressed when i used one. nothing on the better primes or zooms, but not bad.

You've already got the kit lens with the 400D if I recall - why not team that up with the Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro? Whilst eventually you will no doubt want a "real" macro lens, that one will give you the chance at least for a taste of macro stuff, and for it's price (it can be had for around the £150 mark new) it's a cracker of a lens. Since I got my 30d in May I've taken most of my shots using a Tamron 19-35mm (which I snapped up last year from eBay for about £60 but they don't often go for that), a nifty fifty (can't beat it!) and that Sigma. Never found the slight gaps in focal length coverage to be a problem to me at all - a few steps forward or back seem to sort it out!

There would also be a distinct advantage with the light levels with the 70-300 - that long end max aperture on the 18-200mm will, in the not too distant future, prove frustrating I suspect.

Hope that helps?

Well, thank you, god there is so much to think about. hehe. Found the Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro for £130 delivered, so I could well do that quite easy I would think.
