Sigma 17-70 - insurance or warranty issue?

As a result of the tube strike I spent pretty much all day either waiting for buses which did not show or sitting on buses stuck in traffic. I got pretty much nothing done that I intended to. And the strap on my bag broke. And it seems so did my lens.

Between the zoom ring and the small part of the barrel at the rear a gap has appeared on the top of the lens. Not on the bottom side though, which I think might be all that is keeping it in piece. It is only 1/16th of an inch but still enough to be able to see electrical stuff inside.

Everything still seemed to work, though it gives a little if you pull it, and it is the mount that moves not just the casing so I would imagine that could have misaligned things.

Obviously it needs to be repaired, so, the question.

I am not aware of anything I have done to have caused the problem and the lens should is still under warranty for another month, but would this count under that, or would it be considered accidental damage? In which case I presume I would need to contact the insurer before sending it off to Sigma?

I doubt the warranty will cover it, this isn't a manufacturing fault or even wear and tear (doubt they cover that either).

Thanks for the reply. Surely it could be a defect in the lens though? I did not do anything unusual with it or treat it harshly that I could say was otherwise the cause.

Should I contact the insurer (Photoguard) and ask them what to do, then?

They instructions say not to send it away until making a claim, but I would not want to do that until I know that it is not a warranty repair, but I cannot send it to Sigma to find out without violating the terms of the insurance. And if I do ask Photoguard they may they decide from that that it is a warranty issue and then the insurance would not be cover it even if Sigma says it is not covered by them.

I tend to overthink things! And unfortunately have also never had to call on an insurance policy to know what to do in this situation.

Almost definitely an insurance issue. It's when I read threads like this that make me think I should get some. Obviously I won't get round to it though and will regret it when I break something.

glad i sorted my insurance out now, can't grumble at £6/month for £1750 of cover

id be tempted to take it back to where you bought it ,as its presumably not that old , and say that you felt it was a manufacturing fault and that it wasnt fit for the purpose you bought it ,, in that it failed in an unreasonably short time ,lets face it a lens should last quite a while .i wouldnt be looking for a repair either !
