Just took delivery of a Sigma 17-50 2.8 EX DC OS HSM and when i tilt the lens i can hear a noise. Not a "broken" rattle just a slight clunk when i gentle tip it from side to side. Not had a Sigma before is this normal? Is it possibly the OS mechanism that obviously has to "spin" inside?

Just a little concerned.

many thanks

Cheers Chris, thats what i thought it might be. Slightly disconcerting though when i opened it.

Just put it on my camera and even without the OS switch being set to ON - it stops, when camera "goes to sleep" it starts again. Very strange but doesnt look like it'll affect its operation.

If it works don't worry about it.

Nope, seems very quiet when connected to camera (although i am in an office so may need to investigate more at home), still seems to suggest its the stabiliser unit in the lens as when it is actively being powered it stops.

According to an article on "Sigma user" it is perfectly ok and is down to the "free floating design of the OS mechanism" and will occur when powered off or in standby mode.

Phew thats a relief - looking forward to trying it tonight.

I recently got one of these (Sigma 17-50 2.8 EX DC OS HSM) too and have EXACTLY the same symptom....if I tilt the lens there's a clunk - not every time....
This thread suggests it's normal behaviour....it's a bit disconcerting though isn't it?
