I have a Canon 180mm macro lens and for past couple of weeks have finally started going out with it, have the Canon 1.4TC attached to it most of the times and what I was getting from it did not leave me entirely satisfied. I must stress out that its not because of the quality of the lens but rather my technique/lighting, sometimes handholding, others trying with the tripod, even tried the monopod once and I am still getting to grips what is best and what works for me. Then when I ran into some reviews of the Canon 100mm Macro IS lens I had begun to think that perhaps that's what I should have gone for rather than the 180mm, due to the IS probably or even a combination of factors, but boy oh boy, looking at those butterfly shots, taken with 180mm Macro lens in the link I am more determined to work on my technique and get to improve my macro shots with the Canon 180mm now.
I think my main problem is determining how to take the shots outdoors, flash everytime or no flash when outdoor lighting is good etc etc.
But I am certainly going to work on it. One thing is for sure, I personally find it extremely hard to handhold it and get an extremely sharp result, at least to my satisfaction, so now I have decided to start going out with the tripod, always. Heck I even tried monopod, but still no luck. I admit I didn't insist a lot with the monopod though but will give it a further go eventually. For now seems that I will insist with the tripod and take the flash with me just in case, to experiment, but am more inclined to shoot without the flash. I just love the backgrounds that it comes out without the flash
Thank you for such a great link. It has resuscitated my interest in 180mm macros
