A little bit of help and advice is sought from anyone that cares to chip in and offer some. I currently use a Canon 7d mk ii coupled with a Sigma 150-600 Sports for wildlife. I find this set up a little too heavy for walking around and hand holding. I'm considering changing lenses to a Canon 100-400 mk ii with a mk iii converter. This will give me a little bit more versatility with its close focusing ability and of course its a faster lens with roughly the same length at the long end..... My main concern and question is.....Is image quality of the Canon with and without the converter fitted as good as the Sigma at there maximum reach.

I've had a 100-400 II for a while now and it's a fine lens. Last year my 50D died, so I replaced it with a 7DII an excellent companion for the lens. Recently I got hold of a 1.4x III to go with it for an forthcoming wildlife trip. So far it seems to deliver, but I've not taken many shots with the converter on yet.

not a canon user, but had much experience with various types of lenses, looking for the ultimate birding lens (not found it yet)
you will be disappointed with a converter on a zoom lens, you will be better with a fixed lens if going down the converter route .
I did have the 400mm 5.6 canon once, which was a good lens, some may tell you better, but not by my experience
why dont you use a monopod, much better than hand holding, I use mine with a 500mm f4 with no problems,,

I've got a 7D II with 100-400 II & TC 1.4 III, if you can put up with centre spot only focussing I'd say go for it. I'm about to sell the TC though as I couldn't get on with it....

I have the 7d2 but went for the sigma 150-600c, this is a lighter lens and does give great iq. Today I have walked some 4 miles with this setup and found it easy to add I am 67 so no youngster. Before I got this lens I tried out the canon 100-400 mk2 it was very good. My problem was I don't like tc's and I know I would be saying I wish I had the extra reach

I thought it was centre point only, but just saw Matt's post (which now seems to have gone?) and tried the lens + 1.4x TC and it's possible to use centre plus four surrounding focus points. Still not ideal, but a bit better than just one FP.

I thought it was more than that, so I looked at the manual and no mention so I removed my post.

I should have checked with the manual, however only having it on cd rom tends to mean I don't as often as I should.

I have the manuals as PDFs on my iPad. Come in handy from time to time.

I use that combination a lot and it is superb. No noticeable change in image quality, and I only notice a difference in AF speed when photographing swallows on the wing. Go for it; you won't regret it.
