I've just got this lens :) and looking for a UV filter for it but have just heard through the grape vine, from someone who knew someone who had it, that they had a problem with internal reflections when they had a UV filter on.

As this is third hand info am taking it with a pinch of salt but thought I would canvas opinions on here before making a final descion on this .

Never had any filter on my 150-500. As Scott said, if you keep the hood on you wont need a UV filter. It will only end up degrading the image quality anyway, and mine is very sharp and wouldn't want to put anything on it to make it worse.

Used mine with one on but just use the hood now as i found the image quality was slightly better with it off.

Never had the need to use a filter the hood gives good protection for the lens when in use save your money and put to another purchase

Thanks for the advice :) the effect of the filter on the image was the other thing I was thinking about and you've answered that as well

I have a uv filter on my lens and I'm happy with the sharpness ,the only reason I keep it on is to protect the lens but that's an old school way of thinking! It came in useful when I was taking photos of seals from a boat and got splashed! I'm of the " what if" party so I play safe and always put uv filters on my lenses but it all comes down to personal choice.

another thing to consider is the loss of light through the filter on a lens that is already at f6.3 at 500mm
it might not be much of a loss depending on the filter used but at F6.3 every little helps
