2 questions do you have any general thoughts on the sigma 150-500 5.6-6 lens and do you think it could focus with a 1.4 teleconverter on a nikon d7000

Love my 150-500, can't beat it for the money.

BUT it needs lots of light (even before you think about the 1.4 tele!)

D7000 will not AF with the tele either.

Given a very contrasty subject and very good light, my D700 would usually manage to focus with the 150-500 on a 1.5x telecom but would reduce quality below that available by cropping into the full un-teleconned image.

Yes good set up for wildlife shots and Yes :D

I use the same set up on both of my Sony Bodies ( manual focus) need lots of light though as you loose a stop or so

Had the d7000 and the sigma 150-500 in the past, no it won't autofocus with the 1.4 sigma tc, viewfinders very dark, optically it's passable but not really very useable in practical terms, unless you had it on a tripod, even then your at apertures of f11.

Forgot to mention that on its own the lens is excellent, don't think there's anything comes close vfm wise, wish I hadn't sold mine, I've got bigger and faster glass now but nothing as well suited as a walk around wildlife telephoto.

Like the others have said, on its own it's a terriffic lens. Probably my most used lens over a year and I get loads of great IQ shots with it. I tried mine with a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x converter on my 5D3 after I'd upgraded the firmware for AF up to f8 and it AF'd on that quite easily in decent light. IQ took a hit but it was more a try and see if it'll work rather than a 'must get the shot' situation. With a bit more time and the use of a tripod I'm sure you could get some great shots with it.

I don't know the limits of AF f/ numbers on Nikon bodies but if it's f/5.6 like most of the Canons then you're looking more at manual focussing which would give you a whole new set of capabilities. Hand held for a fast moving subject would probably be a big no-no but something like moon shots would be easy to achieve. I used the combo on a 7D and got some great moon shots and other static subjects.

D700 or D7000 Nod?

Heather

700 (seven hundred). I know there's a difference between the 2 but I have no personal experience of the 7,000. The telecom I used was/is a Teleplus 1.5x so not the best available but the combo did manage to AF! Not got the lens any more so can't try it on the D70.

Taken with my Pentax and 150=500 and 1.4x -

Not as bad as I expected, the setup is of little practical use. AF very slow if it worked at all, viewfinder very dark.

Ok that's what I though I use a Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR right now how do they compare optically
