I'm after a 14mm 2.8 lens and the only 2 available are

Canon 14mm 2.8 L and Sigma 14mm 2.8

as the sigma is 1/2 the price of the canon, I wondered if anyone has one or has used one and what they thought of it.

I have read all the reviews of it but want first hand accounts if possible.

Sorry to be blunt but. If you have the dosh buy the canon. quality comparison to me having tried to use both is pretty diffecult as the canon is SO much better across the board.

I would seriously disagree with that.

I usually always recommend Canon lenses over Sigma and Tamron lenses because the quality and build are better but in this case the Canon 14mm F2.8 is lacking in the performance department.
The Sigma 14mm F2.8 is much sharper than the Canon lens, especially at the edges. For sure it doesn't match the Canon build quality but it is still very robust.

Only someone with more money than sense would get the Canon.

 Speak as you find. Fairnuff? Will say only this. I have found over time that 'sigmas' QC is a more variable than 'canons' although common sense says neither can be perfect, so for such a large discrepancy to have come up there has obviously been some differences in the actual lenses used by us both. I think therefor the best we can do is advise mho01 to go and try both on his camera and go from there. At the very least then we wont get the blame whichever way he jumps.;)

Yeah but he can't buy both, can he? The deal breaker is usually price. I love Sigma lenses as they have the decency to charge a reasonable price for thier lenses, something which canon and nikon haven't yet subscribed to.

Sharkey - I loved the Canon 14mm when I was using it but back at the computer the images weren't as impressive.
Since reading FM lens reviews and other review sites the general view is that my experience was typical of the 14mm performance.

For info I used it on a full frame camera - 1Ds MKII

And by contrast, i read a Luminous Landscape review where the Sigma was worryingly soft at the edges on a full frame......

Go to a dealer - try them both - see which works for you :)

Thanks for the reply's

One point is try and find a dealer that stocks either of these lenses is impossible.

I'm going to put it on hold until i go to NY later in the year. I would like one before but will wait.

As for canon v sigma on quality I must say I would always buy canon over Sigma as the price / quality / consistancy of QC has benn a bit hit and miss on sigma.

I'm considering the sigma as its approx 1/2 the price of the canon and its picture quality is supposed to be better than the canon in the corners, which is of concern as it will be used on crop and FF bodies.

I was using them on eos 1V and of course things change. On reflaction it seems to me the Jonnyreb has hit it on the head. Some times the only way is to find out for yourself. Especially when such conflicting reports abound. I mean at the long end 300 f2.8 is a no doubt beauty with almost no detractors, so taking advice is a snip. In this case you only have yourself to blame if you dont check it out personally.
