Is this lens any good? It will be used mainly for taking motorsport shots, so fast AF and good optical quality at the more extreme end of the zoom range is a must. It would be used with a Canon EOS400D body. I'd love to stick some L series glass on the front of my camera, but that's a little outside my finances at the moment. Any experiences using the lens, or any alternatives you can suggest, would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently using a very old Canon 75-300mm f4-5.6 USM II.

Just sold mine today , felt it was a little soft at the extreme end , AF wasn"t as fast as an older Tokina 80-200 F2.8 that I have .
Going for the Sigma 100-300 F4 Lens.

Well the other lens on my list is the Canon 75-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM, which I've read conflicting reports of. Some have said it's a great lens for the money, some have said it's awful and avoid at all costs.

Some one told me buy the best possible lens that you can cos you will regret it if you dont and get frustrated with cheaper/lower quality glass and end up spending more anyway if you stick with the hobby.

That's a little out of my price range, very nice lens though! Ideally I'm looking for below £400, and I know at that price level I'm going to have to compromise on quality, but there's nothing I can do about that at the moment.
