Is the above lens any good for bird photography? Only recently got my A77 and i only have the Sony 55-300mm SAM F3.5-5.6.

I understand there is an 'OS' version of the 120-400mm however it's the non OS I'm querying.

Another lens I've been looking at is the:

Sigma 100-300mm DG f4?

Waste of time really. Whilst I was looking for recommendations....the Mrs went and bought me a Sigma 100-300 f4 behind my back....so I'm guessing it's settled!

The 100-300mm f4 is a superb lens, sharp wide open at all focal lengths and takes the 1.4x teleconverter well.

Having had both I would say your Mrs got it right first time .... :)

On my Pentax body ...

Cheers Mike. What teleconverter are you using, Sigma's?? Just wondering if the Kenko DGX 1.4x works?

Well the 100-300mm has arrived......and (compared to my kit zoom lens), what a lump it is!!

It came with an 82mm Hoya Digital UV (C) filter which I put on before testing the lens. Took it out to test and immediately thought there was a major issue with the lens?.....soooo soft at 300mm!! Took a handful of shots and couldn't get any near sharp enough.

Just out of curiosity I removed the UV filter and bang.....tack sharp at 300?? Why would the UV filter be causing such soft shots??

Had the same thing with a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 I bought on Ebay years ago ... came with filter and after trying it I nearly put in a dispute in immediately. Took the filter off and everything was perfect.
Not used a filter on any lens since, as long as you have the hood on for protection.(other peoples views will vary) ;)
