Hi

i have just had my sigma 105mm macro lens delivered today and it is rather noisey when the barrel extends out like a SMALL cruching sound.

is this normal?

thanks

Mark

i mean it is slightly noiseier focusing out then it is in?

You need to make sure you've got the AF setting engaged on the lens barrell. If you try to us AF while you are set on MF, you can knacker the AF mechanism.

Hi

i have, it is still focusing well, it is just a little bit noisey.

how can you tell if it is knackered?

it is i only a little bit noisier than my other lens, it is normall isn't it?

I've just tried mine on the 350D. It is a noisier AF than on Canon USM lenses. It's difficult to say if it is faulty without comparing it to another 105. If you are not happy with it have it checked or send it back. By reading the manuel I'm not sure how to tell if it's knackered but it does say using it on the wrong AF/MF settings the lens may be damaged.

Hope this is of help:thumbs:

hi brash, it seems slightly noisier than my kit lens but only a liitle bit on the way out, it is still focusing so i am guessing the motor hasn't gone. I just read the manual and it says 'MAY' cause not will and i havn't been using it on that function anyway.

thanks

Mark

if it was worng any ideas of how much it would be or do i just send it back to sigma?

If it's only slightly noisier, then I'd say it's fine. As I said they are noisier and do feel a bit rougher than a lot of the Canon lenses, particularly the USM ones.

Cheers!!!!

Make sure the collar is in the correct position (pulled out for AF) or it does make some unpleasant sounds, and goes EVEN slower.

As said earlier it can kill the AF all together if you get unlucky.

Hi thanks,

when you say kill the autofocus does that mean it stops working.

mine works well and is near silent on the way in but slighlty noisy on the way out, is this similar to any of your experiences

I have this lens and it is quite noisy compared to some but there should definitely not be a crunch or grinding sound.

One thing you will find quite quickly with this lens is, that you won't be using the AF for very long, it's complete pants and manual focus is much better for macro work.

hi thanks snakeman.

it isn't a cruch just a quite a loud whining sound.

any other thoughts

thanks

Mark

sounds like its working perfectly... I love mine for macro, but the focusing speed....
