No
I'm looking at buying the os version of the sigma 105 but after reading lots of reviews, people are mentioning that the os makes a distinct noise.

My question really is to anyone who has this lens, is the noise a deal breaker, for example if you was using the lens during a wedding ceremony? I will obviously be using the lens mostly for its macro abilities but thought it could double up for portraits and candids, which is where I get concerned about the noise mentioned.

I have this lens and it does make a noise when the OS kicks in but it has never caused any issues whatsoever. Its a cracking lens for portraits and macro for sure.

I'd never use a lens like this during a wedding ceremony tbh pal

Thanks for your responses. I also have a 24-70 and an 85 but I struggle with the weight of the 70-200 after renting a couple of times.

I would mostly use the lens for macro but I wondered if it could be useful for extra reach as I would prefer not to rent or buy the 70-200. I know this lens is amazing and cant really be compared.

I used wedding ceremonies as an example really to establish just how noisy the os noise is.... is it so noisy that it would be distracting considering at that length you would be further from the action?

The Sigma 105 doesn't have to be used as a macro lens. This image was taken from quite a distance and then cropped.

Thanks killwilly the lens seems to be very popular and great value considering its performance and reviews.

Has anyone used this for wedding photography, besides the ring shots? How did it perform for candid photography during ceremony or drinks reception for example?

It's really not a very quick focusing lens at all so unless your subjects are stationary or moving very slowly i'd hesitate to use it. I owned one and one of my favourite ever portraits was taken by it. The noise isn't annoying to me but might be during a wedding ceremony.

OK great thank you. Just thought it seemed like a good option to cover the rings and details and then double up later on for some candid shots thanks to its extra reach.

I do have a 85 which I could pop onto my crop sensor for extra reach but I really struggle to get sharp results like I do on my full frame. Admittedly my handheld technique could be to blame. My hands aren't as steady as I wish they were plus no stabilization on that lens. I very rarely get a good shot on my crop sensor with the 85 but great on full frame!

Focus speed of all macros is deliberately slowed down to increase accuracy

True 1:1 macro though on most occasions is focused manually and OS isn't used either

The portrait snapshots that I took with this lens really surprised me, the bokeh and rendering was superb. Was meaning to use it more during recent work but just stuck to my usual lenses

Is that because you weren't happy with the output from your 85mm f/1.8? Until you've worked out what was causing your problems there, changing the lens may not help. Several people suggested that you should post some pictures that you weren't happy with, and they could help diagnose the issues, but you haven't done that.

Absolutely no issues, the noise isn't loud and you only hear it for a fraction of a second.

I only ever use either a 24-70 / 70-200 combo or a 35 / 85 1.4 combo for ceremonies depending on the location.

It's a fab lens and I highly recommend it !
I've used it at weddings, it's a great lens for candids and portraits on FF, and pin sharp wide open.

Though it might be a bit restrictive for the ceremony itself.
