I just bought this lens for £338 inc shipping from Ebay. I *think* i got a good deal judging by the reviews. Anyone got this lens and love or hate it?
It is the HSM version (Cant remember if there ever was one without) and I will be using it on a 30D.
I had a nasty "post ebay finger" moment when i thought "wait a second, will i need to get sigma to chip this sod?" But as i read around, it seems that it is totally compatible with Digital SLR's. Its only 3 years old so i guess there shouldn't be any problems!

Expect a Sigma 70-300 to go on the Trade forums fairly soon if this goes well ;)

Edit: oops, didn't notice it was the non DG, don't know anything about it.

I had one and it DID have to be rechipped, but it was used and not new....Sigma turned it around fairly quickly though.

I have to say that whilst I liked the F4 element of it, because it was non DG, it found it to suffer quite badly from chromatic abberation / purple fringing. All fixable in Photoshop, but it was the reason I went for the Canon 75-300 IS in the end.

Cheers,
James

I used to have one and loved it until I mistakingly started to compare it to better quality glass, then I started to see its flaws and sold it on. That said, it served me well for the two years I owned it!

The Seller has confirmed that he was using it on a 30D and a 400D so I'm covered :D (phew). I had a bit of last minute.com worries there ;)
Anyway, for £338 all in I think it will turn out to be a good buy. Gotta sell the 70-300 next :D

Hi,

I had exactly the same one and no problems on my 350D and I wish I still had it, but got inchy fingers and wanted an 'L' and bought a Canon 100-400 to replace it, the Sigma was better for image quality and contrast etc, but the Canon beats it for length and versatility with the IS and is only marginally poorer for image quality in good light.

Check out my US Football Gallery for Sigma 100-300 F4 Pics and the Knockhill Galleries for the Canon 100-400 Pics.

Both galleries were shot in not very good light but will give you an idea of the sharpness expected in both lenses. The US Football were taken tripod mounted ( ignore the team shots they were taken on a 17-85IS ) and the bikes were monopod mounted.

All you need now is bigger muscles to lug the 100-300 around :D

Mike.

Ill be able to build my left wrist up for other activities

Thanks for the info, it looks like a sharp lens :)
:D

No worries glad to be of help.

Mike.
