Sigma 10-20

Hi. I have a nikon d3200 with kit lenses.
Just wondering would this type of lens compliment my others and be any better for buildings and landscape.
Just a thought but any advice greatly appreciated.
Also in the future would like to see the northern lights.

An ultra-wide angle zoom can be useful for a certain look (making small objects that are close seem large, and large objects that are distant seem small) and in situations where the photographer cannot otherwise put enough distance between themselves and their subject with a more conventional focal length. This lens would complement the kit lens well, but may be of limited usefulness for landscape work. For northern lights, a fixed focal length lens with wider aperture may be more helpful.

Hi Simon. Welcome to TP!

When I had this lens (and very little in the way of a clue about photography) I thoroughly enjoyed using it for a variety of applications including landscape, architecture and even some fun portraits. Lens quality is good compared to a kit lens. The following images are soft due to forum compression and the really small size I put them up at just to save a super-scroll...


As you can see from the above, it does things to the verticals that you may or may not find appealing, especially if you point the camera in any sort of upward direction. However picking out architectural things and keeping the camera level make things a lot better.




And finally, it's great for big skies!

UWA lenses are a useful tool to have in the bag but can become addictive! The Sigma 10-20 is a decent cheap(ish) option for crop sensored bodies.

I like my 10~20.

The only problem for me is that it has relatively normal geometry and therefor is not so spectacular as a fisheye...

Sigma 10~20 at 10mm on Sony A65...



Samyang 12mm fisheye on Canon 40D...
