I have the 1st version & its been a very good servant in landscape photography. But lately I noticed it will not focus & I have to switch off/on the camera to get it going. I was wondering maybe the lens is dying on. I was wondering is version 2 of this lens is good or better than the original. Much appreciated your input from owners of new version.

Could it be a contacts issue between the lens and the body?
 
Thanks, I will have to try other lenses to verify this.
 
Just give both sets (camera & lens) a rub over with a pencil eraser and see if that helps, the contacts do pick up contaminants over time and the eraser is the best thing to clean them with.
 
Re your question, some suggest that the original version is a better lens than the second in terms of sharpness. Certainly it would be worth checking out reviews in detail before making a decision if you do think of replacing it.
