Sigma 10-20 what's the catch?

Ok I know I have just asked a question about the 5D and my 17-40 but I am just toying with my options here :)

Anyway the sigma. How comes it so cheap in relation to it's competitors? It has HSM and it's an EX and well don't all of the super wides have F4 and onwards? It's certainly popular on here and people say it's just as sharp as the canon which from what I read is supposed to be the best of the bunch. It's APS only but isn't this true of all the main competitors?

So where's the catch?

Also has anyone experiance using a cokin p series holder and filter with one? How bad is the vignetting?

I have a kood version of the cokin P holder, it originally had 3 slots for filters and the vignetting was noticable so I cut away the outer two slots so it holds one filter only. It still vignettes at the 10mm end but it's no longer such a big problem.

Sorry no experience of using cokin filters with this lens but can confirm that my copy, at least, is sharp and contrasty and when used between f8 to f11 it is brilliant, my favourite lens, never leaves the front of my 10D. I would suspect that vignetting could be a problem if not used carefully.
Ian

Its a great lens - loved mine! But, on your 30d think fov equivalent of 16-32. You won't notice significant vignetting as the sensor will crop out most if not ALL of that. I used a 77mm UV on mine and didn't notice any issues so your P kit should be just fine. :)

Also , if you're serious about a 5d, dont buy this as it will vignette, without filters, all the way to 20mm. I have the 12-24 now but due to its popeye, no front filters....

On the 30D it's 10-20 same as the others, the 5D would be different and tbh I'd hesitate to even try it on a 5D in case of damage.

Steep - this was part related to Sie's earlier thread about Cokin filters and which are suitable to what fov. We're talking fov change NOT focal length change as vignetting affects the outer image as you know ;)

Just for info, the Sigma will work on the 5d as it does not enter the chamber like EF-S lenses (just has a smaller imaging circle)

I've used it on a 1Ds mk2 and an EOS 50 and it was fun :D Its not designed for it and you probably won't get great landscape images, but hey its worth a shot :) Anything full frame and its the 17-40L.

Understood, good to know that about the lens not entering the chamber like the EF-S ones do.

possibly a fair point - depends whether the front image covers the full diameter or not...... and i don't know the answer to that! ;)

This picture was taken at 10mm on the sigma 10-20mm with a p cokin filter system (ND8 grad filter) and there was no vignetting on it at all as you can see.

lovely shot too, presumably on a C sized sensor?

Better than half the price of the 12-24mm Nikon equivalent, don't know about your eqivalent Canon thingy, and it's a pure joy to take pictures with. I've done the "cut down a "P" series holder" thing as well, no vignetting even at 10mm.

Cokin P wide angle holder wont show at 10mm when shooting portrait but will show at 12mm and less when landscape. I've cut off the last two slots so it's only got one slot and can use it landscape at 10mm now

Does that mean you cant use a circular polariser AND a grad grey nd filter?

Screw in polariser or cokin type, missy?

Thanks pips :)

Still toying with a few options's in my all ready confused mind.

cokin (Kood) circular that slots into the cokin P holder type and a square grad grey thats slots in too, mister! ;)

I have a sigma slim UV filter permanantly attached, and onto this use cokin P series filters. Instead of cutting a holder down cokin do a wide holder, which has only one slot. I find vignetting at 10mm but not at 12. I tried a cokin circular polariser but TBH couldn't get on with it, plus had the vignet problem if using the 3 slot holder, so bought a sigma screw in polariser instead.
Possibly the vignetting I get at 10mm with the cokin is due to the UV filter, as the holder is just that little bit further away from the lens?

blimey..this is proving quite complicated.

I was just going to buy a CP filter, but after reading all the problems about them, i held back. Agree with janice, all this faffing about with cutting up holders sounds like a task. Are ordinary screw in filters really that bad with vignetting?

I don't get any problems at all with the screw in filter, not with the UV or when using a polariser ahead of the UV.(polariser is sigma's slim version) I get vignetting at 10mm when using a cokin filter holder, even when using the purpose made wide one. However, as some pictures above prove, others don't get any vignetting. I wondered if my vignetting was due to the cokin holder being fitted onto the screw in UV.... I really should try it without to find out. Does this make more sense than my previois post?
