Sigma 10-20 settings don't change in Program mode.

I'm a little confused. I never use Program mode just Manual, Aperture, or Shutter, but just messing about today I decided to see how Program mode worked. I read the manual and it said for flexible program just rotate the main command dial to left for small aperture or right for large f number. I just can't figure how this differs from using Aperture Priority mode.

Anyway, with my Sigma 10-20 on camera, I set my D80 to P mode, and then tried to adjust aperture. It would not change. I swapped my lens to my 24mm prime and tried again. This time it changed, therefore couldn't be anything to do with my camera settings. Is this usual for P mode not to work with Sigma 10-20?

I don't suppose I will be using P mode anyway, but I am just curious to know why.

Any comments please.

Can't comment on the Sigma 10-20 phenomena (could you have been testing in low-light with auto ISO preventing a shutter speed drop?).

However I don't understand the purpose of Program Mode either?

I shoot "Apeture Priority" 95% of the time, and have never used or needed P mode.

Thank you for your solution. You were correct. I had my ISO set at 100 and was shooting in low light. When I upped ISO to 800 it worked OK.

P-mode is the 'best' Point n Shoot setting - ideal for when you're on your hols and getting ****ed (drunk) as it'll vary both the aperture and shutter speed to try to capture a shot in almost any condition

For such drunken affairs, it's also a good idea to have Auto-ISO on too - then you're about as sorted as you can be, and by the time P & Auto-ISO can't get a decent shot you're so drunk you...

a) can't be arsed to take any more shots, or
b) have forgotten where the camera is anyway

Now that's a good answer Dave, but I don't think I'll be using Program mode then. I'd be too scared to take my precious camera out on a **** up.
