Shutter timer?

An email from Firstcall included mention of this shutter timer, that I've not come across before. Sounds good, though I'm not entirely convinced by what I read in the PDF...

I'm sure a couple of you have built your own shutter timers? Maybe @Woodsy , @sirch ?

A 50p photodiode/transistor , a resistor and a stereojack plug. Can do same on a PC (or Mac) using audio input and anything that will record and display an audio wave form. Audacity https://www.audacityteam.org/ will do it. Certainly neither will work for digital cameras.

I tend to do as David says but with an oscilloscope just because I happen to have one.

I'm afraid I never made one at home, I used a spare laser I had at work, a photodiode and an oscilloscope.
