Are shutter release cables (for 35mm canon) able to do auto focus, as though when you press the shutter halfway down, or do you have to manual focus and adjust the TV/AV yourself before depressing?

They do have the "half press to focus" but you have to have the body setup to focus on the shutter release button and not the back button.

Thanks, but not sure what you mean, especially by back button?

It's quite common that users will have their bodies setup so that the half press of the shutter button will be for exposure lock and focus will be via the AF-on button (if one exists) or the * button (both of which are on the rear of the camera and operated using the thumb).
The body needs to be set for AF on the shutter button for the remote cord to operate AF via the half press.

Aha, I see what you mean by the back button now, the * for locking the exposure. Thanks for the info, I think I'll give one a go. Thinking of having the cable in my pocket so I can take candids while the camera is sitting on my front... Even thought of having a smaller compact in my jacket pocket at the front with a hole in the pocket...
