Hello.

Ive always been recommended to use shutter priority for motorsport photography. However on flickr im noticing a lot of people using aperture priority.

I started off with in my first year using manual then I went on to shutter priority.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Hi, if you started off using manual, surely you fully understand that it makes no difference at all what priority you allow the camera, as long as the settings you want are used at shutter activation time?

IE. 200th at f8 in TV is the same as 200th at f8 in AV.
The priority you allow the camera just alters which part the camera lets YOU adjust with your thumb wheel.
IE, in aperture priority, you control the aperture and it controls the shutter. The inverse is true for shutter priority.

Shutter is only generally recommended because we want to make sure you force the camera to use a fast enough shutter to freeze the motion or slow enough to allow a degree of background blur with panning. As long as the right speed is set one way or another it makes no odds how you achieve it, be it av, tv or manual.

I don't do motorsports but I never use anything other than fully manual. Never have dome and probably never will.

As stu said, there's a minimum shutter speed, that only you know depending on what you are doing, freezing, slow panning, etc. aperture (f stop) affects depth of field, so that's another consideration, but they all go together. Depending on what light you have, say at the end of the day, you might find you bump up the ISO, open the aperture to give you some decent shutter speed.
Other times with bright sun, you might be going the other way and it's too bright to pan slowly.
Theres no one setting to do all, but that's par of the fun or challenge.

At the moment I am liking TV because with manual I had to take a few more "practice" shots to get the settings correct.

Thanks for the replies

Depends on the situation. AV priority

Manual has its uses but does NOT work for every situation... Tv and Av have there uses as does P ... You really shouldnt ask anyone on a forum what to use for a whole sport.. as others have said you must know a bit to ahve used manual so use whatever suits the situation... masses of sunlight av maybe.. not so bright tv maybe... the reason you ahve opptions on your camera is so you can take advantage of them depending on your needs ... there isnt one mode for one sport...
