Shutter Delay Canon 400D

I have seacrhed the forum for shutter delay & self timer.
Is it possible to set a shutter delay to 1 second.

It should be Custom Function 9 in the tools 3 menu

Changing that did not work. Am sure i read somewhere that it is possible to set a delay on trigger press but i forget where, there's no mention in the manual.

If you set the Mirror Lockup and use the self-timer it will default to 2 seconds delay

Tried the mirror lockup but the VF goes black for those two seconds. I am just trying to keep my camera shake to a minimum, but... i nearly always try to steady/brace myself against something anyway.
