Can anyone tell me how accurate it is?

100%. But the info is written into the EXIF data on Nikon cameras, so its not difficult to check

It's as accurate as your file you sent/uploaded and dependent upon any changes Nikon may have made if you sent your camera to them for repair and they changed chipsets!

In other words, pretty much 100% accurate

On a Mac its easy. You just open the file in preview and then TOOLS > SHOW INSPECTOR. There are loads of readers available

Download exiftool and drop any image file on it. It will tell you more than you ever wanted to know, but towards the bottom of the displayis the shutter count ... http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
