I need to find out the shutter count on my 5D so I can advertise it for sale as I want to change to the 1DS MkII (or MkIII). Can anybody tell be how to find out the count on the 5D (I've RTFM and can't find anything)?

You can't unfortunately. Only Canon can.

Unless some new method has emerged within recent weeks that I haven't heard about, it's only Canon themselves who can tell you. This topic has cropped up regularly over the past couple of years on another renowned forum. People have pointed towards a couple of methods but none so far have worked. Again......unless somebody knows differently.....

In 'Menu' I have always had 'file numbering' set to 'continuous'. If I open up the last image (just this minute taken) in 'INFO' I get a folder image with 100 and a page symbol with 3641. The images for today have file IDs running consecutively from MG_3525 to MG_3640. The only issue being that I shoot RAW and JPEG together so the same shot gives two files MG_3640.jpeg and MG_3640.CR2. Which I guess makes sense as they're from a single shutter actuation.

Does this suggest that my shutter count may be 3641? I'm pretty sure that it should be under 5k as I still shoot as if I'm using film (I can't get used to just blatting away).

Yes it does although if you shoot RAW + JPG all the time you should obviously double the figure you quote with respect to actual shutter operations.

Forget what I've just said - it's garbage!!!

Depends, once the count gets to 9999 it will reset to 0000 so it's often hard to tell how many times your body has reset the count.

When it gets to 9999 it resets the folder number from say 100 to 101 when it turns to 0001 again

Unless you put a card in that you've forgotten to empty, in which case it picks up where that card left off....which I found out to my annoyance with my 5D and previous 10D

It's definitely not reached 9999
