Hope this is the right place to ask? And sorry for a convoluted question!

I have a shoulder/sling strap I use on my DSLR (Nikon D5000) and want a similar one for my Canon A1 - I only paid about £10 for the one I currently have.

There are some very pricey ones available but I can't really afford those.

The ones I have seen on eBay/Amazon - similar to the one I have for my DSLR are much more reasonably priced:

Amazon: http://SPAM/j4ntnhx OR http://SPAM/jdt9lcc

eBay: http://SPAM/zdw28ll

My worry is they won't support the weight of my A1 with Powerwinder/zoom lens. Can someone advise at all?

Also, the one I have now has a screw that fits the tripod mount of my Nikon D5000 but doesn't fit the tripod mount of the A1 - I thought tripod mounts/screws were a standard size - can someone advise on this too?

I appreciate any help you can offer.

my 'personal' idea is that a strap for my A-1 should be black and elegant

not a hippy embroidered psychedelic 2'' strap........

i have a distrust of any 'one-point' attachment - altho there are indeed some quality suppliers
and alway use a strap which attaches to the camera lugs
use triangular split rings rather than those round key-rings....:(

just got one of these for my F3 and well pleased..........£17

or a traditional black/grey strap with a Canon shoulder pad

Your questions confused me, surely the A1 is lighter than the average DSLR?

And whilst tripod mounts come in 2 flavours, I'd expect those 2 to be the same size, are you sure the A1 tripod mount is still the std 1/4"

i have a new unused Canon strap you can have for 'free'

it is in RED - a bit too bright for my taste..............

it has the usual threaded folded strap attachment ( like the one above) rather than snap-clips as shown in this pic ( which can scratched the body)
just PM me your address if suitable

That's a nice strap. In my eBay watch list now. I take your point about one point attachments. The one I got for it was a woven Canon one. It's actually ok, just a little uncomfortable after a while.

That is so nice of you and thanks. I will cover postage. Thing is, as a newbie here: where do I PM you/someone? (d'oh)

Hi Phil, my D5000 seems much lighter than the A1 - plastic over metal I guess. And I do have the Powerwinder attached to the A1 as well. I need to find some scales to check - thought I had some!

As to the tripod screw on the bottom of the A1: it seems shallower than on the D5000 and the attachment didn't want to 'bite' so I didn't want to force it. Further investigation needed.

@thewiccaman

David

what lens did you get with the A-1..?

It came with the stock 50mm/f1.8 and I bought a Tokina AT-X 35-200mm zoom for I think around £20. I've also just bought a Sigma 28-70mm zoom for £12.50 - not got it yet. I need to stop buying now!

I wouldn't worry about the weight, whilst it might be heavier than your D5000 it'll be nothing compared to a D4 ;)

Good to know, cheers. Now I just have to work out the tripod mount issue.

my Canon A-1 = 6.33mm deep

my Nikon D300 = 6.88mm deep

same threads

the adapter plate for my tripod fits both quite firmly

I carry my Mamiya M645J medium format kit on a similar sling strap and have no issues with weight. Not sure about the tripod socket being shallower on the A1 but if the thread diameter is the same m, it should screw in ok.

Very odd. It is a screw in mount that my one-point shoulder strap clips onto. Definitely seemed to be a different depth/thread even. Having said that, my Manfrotto monopod works in both. I need to investigate further as I said.

This is all good then. This has allayed my concerns so thanks.

Don't think so. Works ok on my D5000. I may take it in to London Camera Exch - only 'real' camera shop in Derby now :(

Ok, tried again with the screw in mount: was just a little resistant but does fit onto my Canon fine (onto the Powerwinder). This was a case of user error  on my part so many thanks for the help.
