Yes
I'm about to buy a 300mm lens, my heart is set on a second hand 300mm f/4 AF IF-ED Nikkor at £300, and at the same time I'm looking at getting a 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Zoom-Nikkor for £95

I want to buy both, but would I be wasting my money getting a prime and a zoom?

no i dont think you would be wasting any money its always better to get more lens to give you the options
go for it

Depends what you're shooting I suppose - what are you shooting, and what other lenses have you got?

The 300mm prime you're considering is a great lens.

as said above it depends on what you shooting allthough if your going to get the 300mm prime i'd be tempted to go foa a better quality medium range zoom like a second hand 80-200 which I think would represent a much better investment without compromising your range obviously it will cost a little more!

I've currently got the 300 F4 and the 70-300 VR.

Both have their uses.

Well the money that would have been used on the prime is now paying the deposit on my student housing, so I'll be ordering the 75-300mm tomorrow, the dinosaur amongst CPU lenses that it is, I'm still satisfied that it's better than a G-series lens.
