I'm looking for a better camera that does video at at least 720P if not full 1080P HD.

I am reliably informed that the Nikon D90 should satisfy my needs, I've seen one on eBay for £36, and I've put a £49.50 bid on it to ensure I win... Is it worth it though in case I do get outbid close to the end of next week when the bid closes?

Does photography also suffer from the N+1 rule?
Excuse my ignorance but you what?

Also, if I was to put that Nikon D50 I received on Monday back on eBay, as I'm finding it a bit complicated to use, what starting/buy it now price should I use given that I paid £49.50 for it last week?

I agree with Alan, practice with the one you have (y)

The D90 is not good for video.

Yes the N+1 rule I find is pretty common lol.

N = the number of said items you have (cameras/bikes/watches, etc).

+1 = the number you need (lol).

One reason I have three road bikes and two gravel bikes (N+1) lol.

Now, I'm not sure if this is a purely male phenomenon lol my wife said it is..but I said if that's the case explain all your nail varnish colours, make up, eye liner and so on.....

In your place I think I'd get to grips with the D50 and forget about buying anything else for a while.

:plus1: :agree:

I know very little of Nikon bodies but I have to ask. If you are finding the D50 complicated what is it about the D90 that makes you think it won't also be a "bit complicated" ?

Do you think the D90 is going to be less complicated than the D50 ?

I took a quick look - no D90s have sold for under £100 which is way outside of your budget..

The D90 I can see on ebay with a current bid of £36 looks faulty - the seller had to sellotape the flash closed. A fully working D90 will usually go for a fair bit more. Winning bids are often made in the closing seconds of an auction. A D90 won't in any case be less complicated to use than a D50.

Some of that eye liner & make up might some in handy for your upcoming black eye :ROFLMAO:

Possibly lol.

I need something for wk 4 of my 52 for 2022 though, so could be useful lol

The other part of the N+1 rule is S-1 where S is the number of bikes/ cameras/stuff that will lead to separation from your partner :D
Ah man, if only it was that simple lol.

Pretty much all the digital camera stuff I need, some 35mm film stuff, star tracking gear, Mk1 Escort in the lock up and she still holds my hand :) :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Please please please don't buy any more cameras. The old saying goes "buy cheap, buy twice". In your case it's buy cheap buy about six times.

To put it bluntly you don't know enough about what you are looking for to make an objective choice about which camera you need. You seem more concerned with getting a bargain than actually figuring out what you want to do and buying an appropriate camera for your needs. This approach is absolutely 100% costing you more money in the long run.

Learn to use what you have so you can decide whether it meets your needs. If it doesn't, figure out why it doesn't and buy a camera which does, based on your own experience. Otherwise you will buy the D90, realise that 14 year old DSLR's are not worth buying and buy something else, and so it goes on.

If you're finding the D50 too complicated, don't even think of getting the D90 or anything above that, there even more complicated, stick with what you have, and spend some time understanding its functions, and get out and play with it.

With all the cameras I have I have known how to use them for what I want and how high an iso I will use for a shot if I want it, and even before they have been delivered to me. I read a lot of reviews look on Flickr, I am not good at all the jargon but with me I know just what setting to use for my images. Then I will buy the camera and as soon as it's delivered I get out and about to test them. I am lucky and have six cameras yet for what I shoot I know how to use them, so maybe listen to the advice given saying stick with what you got and LEARN how to use it.

Forget it. As has been already stated, whatever you find complicated about the D50, add on more for the D90. Get an app for your camera phone which gives you more control and start off learning from that. You can’t learn photography by buying more kit (except that it costs money).

You know, I think we’re all being taken for a ride here. I’ve given the o/p plenty of advice, as have others, and it’s nearly all been ignored. Someone is pulling something, but I don’t know who or what.

Richard...

I really think you should get to grips with the D50 before moving on but if you simply can not resist the urge to spend your money and buy something... in your place I'd go for a 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 for about £50.

But I really do hope you decide to get to know the D50 as I don't think that moving on so quickly to another camera is going to help you and in fact it may make you more frustrated and maybe a little angry or upset if you come to think that you've spent yet more money on yet more kit and not really moved forward.

The OP has previously said he has health issues. I can surmise that some aspects of his buying behaviour may in some way be related to/by this.

I sincerely hope he can get to grips with his D50 and concentrate on learning how to handle it and in due course show us some of his favoured subject, Comic Con.

Only if you don't count shoes.:exit:

If I remember rightly, the D90 doesn't have continuous auto focus in video mode, so you have to keep refocusing yourself when you move the camera around
As has been mentioned, do you have a smartphone ? Try the video mode on that, they are often good

I think we should be a bit careful here. I know it's easy for patience/support to wear thin but I for one feel pretty good about this community when I see that (unlike many other forums, I'm sure) TP members have, 99% of the time, remained very respectful and supportive in this particular situation.

Edit: Box Brownie has said what I was trying to articulate in a far better way!

Agreed. Get the feeling they're more interested in "stuff" than actually taking photos.
Plenty to be doing with the D50 it's plenty good enough to get going better than my first camera that sparked my interest.

I did suggest that encouraging the op to buy a dslr might not be the best course of action.
Results are likely to be poor to start with which can lead to interest being lost.
By his own admission he is finding it complicated which I also suspected might happen.
A good point and shoot seems the logical choice to me

If this is the camera (the only one currently at £36):
It might be possible to fix the flash that won't stay down by adjusting this:
But it might not. Personally I would contact the seller and ask them to cancel the bid. Or stock up on sellotape.

The 5Dmk2 was like that, apparently they were used (at 1080p) for some hollywood movies but no autofocus in video and even getting into video mode was quite complicated.
I think I tried it once.

What do you think would be so much less "complicated" about any other camera? Nothing. Get to grips with it then move on to a better and better model.

For video let me suggest that you will want something with reliable autofocus if you don't want to get into mega complicated. But get to grips with d50 stills first. It won't be overnight. It's a long process

Having been through a long list of Nikon bodies over the years ,and knowing your financial restraints .. you have been given sound advice re doing video on your phone …. Whether you listen or not is entirely up to you Richard .. if for any reason and based on actual I.q quality and handling experience and 2020 prices the two cameras I would investigate further that will give you a mega leap forward are either the Nikon D300s or the canon 1Dmkiii both are just below pro level bodies and are for you a quantum leap forward
