Hi

Currently use a Nikon D300s, with D90 as back up. Lenses I currently have are the 18-200 VR and also 18-70mm DX.

My photography is mainly Landscapes, Portraits and starting to do some nude, mainly of my partner at the moment.

I have been thinking in getting a Nifty Fifty, is it worth it?

Any comments well received.

Cheers

If it is the f1.8 you mean, I would say that is probably one of Nikons best value for money lenses, sharp optics and able to isolate a subject.

The only thing with a prime is that you are stuck with that focal length, and only you know what you want, set one of your zooms at 50mm and see what field of view you get.

I have one, it did not get a lot of use on my D300 once I got a 35/2, however when I did use it I wondered why I did not use it more, as I was never disappointed with the results.

It is indeed a great lens for the money. As said though, be sure you like the 50mm focal length, because if like me, you don't like it, then I suggest getting a different length. The 35mm 1.8G and the 85mm 1.8D are also excellent lenses. Granted they are more of the green stuff, but worth considering :)

I run a Sigma 50/1.4 on my D300 and it's an awesome portrait lens for head and shpoulder shots. I sold my Nikon 50/1.8 to get it. The Nikon was great. Cheap, reasonably sharp wide open but the Sigma blows it away. Lovely creamy bokeh, as sharp at 1.4 as the Nikon was at 1.8, fast AF with HSM, great build.

I would deffo recommend you get a 50 prime. I have had owned the 18-70 and my dad owns the 18-200 both good lenses, however a 50 prime gives you a completely different shooting experience and well worth the investment. Make sure the focal length works for you however. The 35/1.8 AF-S or an 85/1.8, both reasonably prices could offer you more of what you want. Try experimenting using your 18-200 at these 3 varying lengths and see how you feel.
