Should i go for RAW?

Hi all,

I am looking at upgrading my digital camera, i like to take pics underwater when i am diving so if i am truely honest then the combined cost of camera lens housing and port will probably make a dslr cos prohibitive.

But while i have been looking at different cameras i have been reading a bit about RAW. I have gathered that RAW is a better format for adjustment. So should i go for a compact that is RAW capable?
 
Short answer.... Yes.

Long answer, not so easy.
Raw does bring more data to the computer for you to work with. That's true in all cases. The trouble with compacts is they alll have more noise than a DSLR and that noise takes away the usefulness of some of that extra data. So in short if a compact camera that doesn't offer RAW happens to meet all your other needs best, I'd say it could be the better bet.

sorry mate i'm a bit slow on the old keyboard.

if i'm right jpeg is a compressed file the camera decides what it needs or not in underwater photography colour is lost at depth but would still be there in RAW as jpeg loses it
